What is the glance test for YouTube titles?
The glance test asks one question: could a stranger tell what this video is, and why it's interesting, in about one second? A title fails when its text could sit on a completely different video — 'WORTH IT?', 'This Changed EVERYTHING' — because generic text gives the viewer nothing to judge the click on. Specific subjects, concrete numbers, and a clear promise pass; hype without a subject fails.
How long should a YouTube title be?
Roughly 40–60 characters. YouTube truncates titles at around 70 characters in most feed layouts, and anything cut off can't do its job. Under 40 characters usually means the title isn't making a full promise; the sweet spot states a subject and a reason to care with room to spare.
Do clickbait titles still work on YouTube?
Curiosity works; content-free hype doesn't. A title that opens a real question the video answers ('Why Norway Buried $1.4 Trillion') outperforms both a bland label and empty bait, because YouTube's systems follow viewer satisfaction: titles that over-promise get clicks, short watch times, and then fewer impressions.
